What is Ideal Protein?

ideal protein is a medically developed ketogenic weight loss and weight management protocol. It includes two key components – weight loss and lifestyle education so that you are empowered to sustain your weight loss results.

Does it work?

Ideal Protein is highly effective.  A large percentage of Piedmont Family’s Ideal Protein clients reach their goals.

I’ve heard it’s not a balanced diet. Is it dangerous?

Ideal Protein is intentionally imbalanced, creating a carbohydrate deficit so your body turns to fat for fuel. This process is safe because it has a beginning and an end, and you are following a medically-proven protocol that takes into account your medical history, including medical conditions you have and medications you take.

Why shouldn’t I just do keto on my own?

Unlike most keto diets, Ideal Protein is an adequate—not hyper—protein diet. Although the protocol does include some animal protein, IP relies heavily on plant-based protein, which is lower in calories and fat, providing better nutrition and quicker results.

Although protein is an essential part of the diet, you’ll also eat a significant amount of vegetables, ensuring that you are getting the essential nutrients your body needs and so that you learn to enjoy the healthy foods you’ll be eating long-term in maintenance.

Ideal Protein also requires regular meetings with your coach who will provide support, accountability, and guidance throughout your weight loss journey. This support is an essential part of IP and is a big reason for dieters’ success. Research indicates that people who set a goal and have a coach are far more likely to be successful.

How quickly do people lose weight?

The rate of weight loss depends on how much you have to lose, your gender, and your body composition. Women tend to lose 1-3 pounds per week, and men 2-5.

How long will I be on it?

You will be in the diet phase for as long as you need to achieve your goals. If you have only 20 pounds to lose, you will likely only be on the diet for a couple of months, with an additional 2 month step-down/stabilization phase.  You will also learn how to maintain your healthy weight during the maintenance phase. If you want to lose 100 pounds or more (which many of our dieters have successfully done!), the process could be several months or over a year.

Many of our dieters who go on protocol in an effort to reduce medications find they achieve their results (e.g., going off insulin, no longer needing a CPAP) within a few weeks.

Won’t it be hard? How will I feel when I’m on IP?

This is a diet, and it won’t always be easy. But it does yield results quickly, which is very motivating. After the first week, most dieters actually feel better: they are sleeping better, don’t feel hungry, and are enjoying the rich flavors and taste of nourishing foods.

How quickly will I see results?

It is common for dieters to lose 10-15 pounds in the first month and, because most of the weight loss is fat, to drop sizes even more quickly.

Why should I bother? I’m just going to gain it all back.

Weight regain can happen. No diet is a vaccine against weight loss, and our bodies are designed to gain weight. But IP is designed to give the tools and support you need for long-term success. Unlike other diets, IP is focused on both helping your reach your goal and empowering you to maintain your healthy Ideal Lifestyle.

It’s important to keep in mind that muscle is the engine that burns calories. If you lose weight on a standard low-cal diet, you’re losing muscle along with fat, making weight regain more likely. IP includes the protein your body needs to help you retain your muscle mass, increasing your chances for long-term success.

While you’re on protocol, you’ll learn to enjoy the flavor of the natural, wholesome foods, especially vegetables, that are the foundation of lifelong healthful eating. You’ll also be working with your coach to better understand your eating habits and to develop strategies for making healthy choices.

Once you reach your goal weight, IP has a plan to help to transition to your Ideal Lifestyle which includes a mandatory, 8 week stabilization period, and check-in meetings with your coach for 12 months after you reach their goal.

Will my insurance cover it?

It really depends on your policy. Many dieters have had their administrative fee paid for, and some plans even cover the cost of food. Contact your insurance company directly to see what your benefits are.

I’ve been on lots of diets. Will this one really work?

Don’t be discouraged by past failures and setbacks. You can do this! Ideal Protein is highly successful, yielding consistent results for dieters. If you follow the protocol, you will see results. Ideal Protein can help you live a healthier life!

Will I have to do a ton of exercise?

Exercise is critical for healthy living long-term, but it is not the key to weight loss. We encourage you to be active on protocol, but it is the food choices you make that are essential.

What will I actually eat?

During the weight-loss phase, you’ll eat several IP foods a day, a significant amount of vegetables, and some lean protein. Once you reach your goal, you will work with your coach to phase off the diet, reducing and eventually eliminating the need for IP foods while adding back in foods that weren’t compatible with weight loss but are allowed during maintenance.

I have Type 2 diabetes. Is it safe?

Dieters with Type 2 diabetes find great success on Ideal Protein. Time and again, both dieters and their doctors are surprised by the positive impact of IP on blood sugar levels; many dieters reduce their medications quickly and many go off meds altogether. In fact, if you have Type 2 diabetes, the biggest concern may be making sure your blood sugar levels don’t drop too fast. We know this can be an issue, so your coach will help you know what to look for and will encourage you to be in contact with your doctor.

I am on medication. Will IP be safe for me?

Before you start the diet, you are required to fill out a detailed medical profile. This allows us to give you guidance and to ensure that our protocol is safe.

I hate the whole group discussion thing. Do I have to come to weekly meetings? Why should I have a coach?

Regular one-on-one meetings with your coach are an essential part of the Ideal Protein weight loss protocol. Your coach will provide support, encouragement, guidance, ideas, and accountability.

Meetings typically last 15 minutes, and there are appointments available in the morning, starting at 7:30 a.m., and in the evening, until 7:45. We are also open from 8:00 a.m.-noon on Saturdays.
